7 Art Rules I Completely Ignore as a Self-Taught Artist

As a self-taught artist, my creative journey has been full of experimentation, unexpected discoveries, and learning to trust my instincts. Over time, I have realised that art doesn’t always have to follow a set of rules. Sometimes, the most interesting results come from doing things differently.

Here are seven rules I happily break in my studio.

1. I Don’t Always Know the Technical Terms

I may not know the correct name for every technique, but I know what I want to express on my canvas. I often learn through observation, experience, and experimentation.

2. I Use Unconventional Tools

Not every tool in my studio is meant for painting! I love experimenting with different objects and materials to create unique textures and unexpected effects.

3. I Mix Colors by Instinct

I don’t always follow color formulas. I keep mixing until the colors feel right and express the mood I want to create.

4. I Cover Up Hours of Work

Sometimes, I spend hours creating a layer only to cover it with another. It can be difficult to let go, but I have learnt that every layer doesn't need to be visible in the final painting.

5. I Don’t Plan Every Detail

I don’t always sketch everything beforehand. Sometimes, I begin with an idea or a feeling and allow the painting to develop naturally.

6. I Experiment Without Knowing the Outcome

“What happens if I try this?” is a question I often ask myself. Not every experiment works, but each one teaches me something new.

7. Sometimes, I Don’t Know What Comes Next

There are moments when I stand in front of my canvas without knowing the next step. I have learnt that uncertainty is a natural part of the creative process.

Finding My Own Artistic Voice

Being self-taught once made me feel that I was missing something. Today, I see it differently. Learning on my own has encouraged me to experiment, make mistakes, and discover my personal way of working.

I believe learning the rules is valuable, but art also requires curiosity, courage, and the freedom to explore beyond them.

Sometimes, creating meaningful art isn't about knowing exactly what you're doing. It's about trusting yourself enough to discover what comes next.

A question for fellow artists: What is one art rule you happily ignore in your creative process?
